HFXC-6700
High Frequency Transformer
Onboard Battery Charger
for Electric Vehicles

ELECTRICS

The HFXC-6700 is a transformer-coupled high frequency power converter. It passes a constant amount of power through the transformer to the batteries. Since both voltage and current are controlled on the primary side, neither the output voltage nor the output currrent from the secondary is regulated, but their product is held constant. This allows the batteries themselves to control the voltage/current relationship, within the limits set by the Temperature Compensated Average Cell Voltage Threshold Detection Circuitry.

The transformer coupling also provides complete isolation between the power mains and the battery/drive system, and does not interfere with the necessary grounding of the vehicle, for additional protection.

When less than 170 VAC is supplied, the charger will pass no more than 1800 Watts, the maximum allowed from a standard 120 VAC outlet. When 170 to 220 VAC is supplied, the charger will pass no more than5000 watts. When more than 220 VAC is supplied, 6700 watts are supplied during the initial step of the charging process, when 80% to 85% of energy previously discharged is returned to the batteries. To put back the rest, the next steps occur at progressively lower power levels, to reach a total return of 110% in the shortest possible time. This method also provides battery cell equalization as an integral part of every charging cycle, eliminating the need for manual human intervention to provide periodic equalization.
